Garrett Hypes - President/Owner

Garrett Hypes grew up in Los Angeles California in the northeast area community of Eagle Rock right between Glendale and Pasadena. This was an area where many LA studio musicians lived. He started on the clarinet in 4th grade, then switched to alto in 7th grade when he entered Eagle Rock Jr/Sr High. In the 8th grade Garrett started taking formal lessons on saxophone from Don Rafell who was a well known studio jazz saxophonist in Los Angeles. Later he studied with sax greats Don Menza, Terry Herrington, and Warne Marsh. He has also studied at California State University Long Beach, Long Beach City College, and Los Angeles City College as well as UNLV (Las Vegas, NV).

  

Garrett was a member of  California High School All Star Band at the Monterey Jazz Festival 1973 and 1974 backing up Gerry Mulligan, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Mundell Lowe, Max Roach.

 

In Nevada Garrett was also a member of The Nevada Jazz Orchestra under Barry Ross and The

Jack Montrose Group with Carson Smith, Joe Castro, Tom Montgomery, and Herbie Phillips and Joe Williams.

The Temptations (also separately with David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Dennis Edwards), The Four Tops, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Sheena Easton, David Cassidy, Wayne Newton, Tom Jones, Lola Falana, Steve Martin, Alan King, Shecky Greene, Foster Brooks, Debbie Reynolds, Doc Severinsen, Robert Goulet, and Al Hirt.

 

His television performances include Mr. Vegas All-Night Party starring Drew Carey, Penn & Teller "Sin City Spectacular, and the Ron White Show.

Katie Kerick - Vice President

Katie Kerick has been playing saxophone for 15 years. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance from Mansfield University in 2014. Katie is fluent on all 4 different saxophones. While at Mansfield University, she was involved in Wind Ensemble (Principal Saxophonist), Jazz Ensemble (Lead Alto & Bari Sax), Mountie Sound Machine (Bari Sax), Marching Band (Alto Sax), Saxophone Quartet (Soprano, Alto, & Bari), and many other appearances. She has performed on various student recitals and concerts during her time at Mansfield University. Katie has also have been lucky enough to perform/work with Ernie Krivda, Chris Vadala, Rich Thompson, Wayne Bergeron, The Village VanGuard Band, the New York Voices, Dr. William Wakefield, Dr. Stephen Gage, Dr. Timothy McAllister, Dr. Kenneth Tse, Dr. Otis Murphy, Professor Carrie Koffman, Professor Chien Kwan-Lin, and various other guest artist that have come to Mansfield University. She has also performed a Junior, Senior, and Quartet Recital during her undergraduate career. 

While at Mansfield University Katie developed a passion for arranging music. She has had many of her pieces performed with saxophone quartets and saxophone large ensembles. She is currently working on publishing her pieces, and making them available to saxophonists. 

After graduating from Mansfield University Katie received her Masters degree in Music Performance with a concentration in saxophone. She was involved in the Wind Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Repertoire Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, various chamber ensembles, performing at the Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, and perform as a soloist.

Katie is currently living in Las Vegas working here at Saxophone.com as well as performing with various ensembles around the area while still having time to arrange music.
